Well hot topic is should we use the Solarus Engine or make our own. Thank you to the great poll sugestor nimos for the idea. Feel free to post your own pros and cons to convince it for your side. (Trying to make the initial post neutral.)
Engine | Scratch | + Could get the project done faster | + Could break new ground and provide an engine for games to come. | + Uses C++ that everyone knows. | + Not a cop out. | + Less work | + Could start defining the engine now instead of waiting for the final design of the game. | - Will be hard to use C++ cross platform. | + Would probably use Javascript so everyone could pick it up and go without messing with their IDE | - Getting IDEs setup will be tough. | - Would need to design a full engine. |

I have to say I feel slightly more inclined to use the engine to make the game. I feel like it would be too much of a challenge to build the entire game from the ground up. I honestly have no idea how to go about doing that, and unless someone has a plan on how to do such a thing, I think it would be better to just start from the engine.

I'm vaguely familiar with programming. I would think that it would be easier to modify what we don't like in the Solarus engine rather than completely recreate it - unless people don't like the majority of what the existing engine looks like. Honestly, I kind of like the LTTP look of it, so I'm all for using the open source engine.

I can't really have a say on most programming details, because I know absolutely nothing about programming. But would an environment like the one below be possible to create on the Solarus engine? I want our game to be unique and appealing, "Link to the Past" has a great art direction, but our game is not Link to the past.

Okay I'd really like to decide what we're doing soon because I'm not sure if I should bother trying to understand Solaris or not. There are 8 votes in the survey and I'm pretty sure that's how many coders there are, so providing some random people didn't just vote, I think that it's safe to say that Solaris wins. Unless you want to wait a little longer for more votes. Next step is to decide who does what with it, I suppose.

Can't you also add to solarus if it's open source? ie add our own features like we would with making our own anyway.

Ah sorry, it's been a hectic weekend. By the looks of it we will just be using Solarus. It just makes more sense and hopefully those who voted no will still be working with us And yes we can add to it! If we're super productive and finish our stuff before the other teams we can make our own (Maybe even in Javascript har har) IDE I forked the project so we can develop on our own without bothering the original developer. github.com/ChuckL/solarusI still need to play with it more since it's been a while since I've used GitHub (I use a personal SVN server for my private stuff) also I haven't found the time to compile it using many IDEs yet but I have found their installation guide www.solarus-games.org/solarus/compilation-instructions/I have time later tonight so I'll play with it more and probably make an official post or something.

Actually, JS would be fine for this sort of game, surely? Not saying to use it obviously for other reasons, but it would presumably make porting the game to a mobile (android) device relatively simple, no?

Yes, and actually I would love to do it in Javascript and then use WebGL as the base for graphics. It would also be easier to share our code and run so we don't have to mess around with compiling C++ for multiple systems.
We could also make the core engine and everyone else who wants to make their own zelda-style game could use our engine as well.
Also I forgot to set up a closing date. So I think 11:59pm tomorrow(Thursday) EST we'll close it and go from there.
