For example, the fire realm would have rock, while the forest would have jazz, the electric dungeon would have techno, and the castle would have classical.

Sounds like a good plan. Only issue I'd see with this would be that it might be quite jarring going between areas suddenly and moving from around genres, so there'd have to be strict rules on tone, loudness etc (i.e. no happy hardcore, as a ridiculous example) and to keep things minimal enough so they don't distract the player  |

I like the idea. Though my only adverse thought would be the choice of music for the forest. I kind of like what Twilight Princess did with Faron Woods. The calming instrumentals made me keep going back just to listen. I don't know if jazz would really quite fit.
